The sled pull is the station that wrecks hands. Not the sled push, which is legs and position with your hands parked on the uprights. The pull, where you haul a loaded sled toward you hand over hand on a rope while your palms are soaked.
If you have finished a race or a hard session with a flap of skin hanging off the base of a finger, this is where it happened.
What is actually tearing
It helps to be precise, because the fix depends on the mechanism.
This is not a pressure injury. Your hands are not being crushed. It is abrasion under load: the rope moving across your skin while your skin is gripping back. Every pass drags a little. Over 50 metres of pulling, that adds up.
Three things make it much worse:
- Wet skin. Damp skin is softer and separates from the layer beneath more easily than dry skin. By the sled pull you have run several kilometres and you are drenched. This is the single biggest factor.
- Raised calluses. A callus that sits proud of the surrounding skin is a handle for the rope to catch. It does not wear down gradually, it lifts at the edge and peels.
- Letting the rope run. If you grip and let the rope slide through a closed fist rather than releasing and re-gripping, you are deliberately dragging rope across skin under tension. It feels faster. It is how people take the skin off in one rep.
How to actually stop it
Fix your hands before race week
File your calluses level with the surrounding skin. A pumice stone or a callus file, after a shower while the skin is soft, taking off the raised ridge and nothing more. You are not trying to remove the callus. The thickened skin is protective. You are trying to remove the lip that catches.
Do this regularly and gently, and do it at least a week or two out. Skin that has just been filed hard is tender and tears more easily than skin that has settled. The night before your race is the worst possible time.
Change how you pull
Grip, pull, release cleanly, re-grip further along the rope. Hand over hand, with the rope stationary in your hand during each pull. The rope should move because you moved it, not because it slid through your fingers.
This is slower for about two reps while it feels unfamiliar, and then it is not slower at all. It is also less tiring, because a fist clamped around a moving rope is doing isometric work the whole time.

Manage the moisture
You cannot stop sweating, but you can avoid arriving at the rope with soaking hands if there is anything to wipe on. Chalk helps against light sweat and stops helping once you are properly wet, which unfortunately is when the sled pull arrives. There is more on that trade-off in chalk versus gloves.
Put something between skin and rope
The most direct fix is a layer. A thin glove with a grip palm takes the abrasion instead of your skin, and a palm with real traction reduces the sliding in the first place, which is the actual cause.
The caveat matters though. A thick, padded glove costs you feel on the rope, and a glove that shifts on your hand under load can increase sliding rather than reduce it, because now the glove moves against both the rope and your skin. If you go this route, pick carefully.
If it has already happened
Mid-race there is not much to be done. Finish, and know that the carries after it are going to be unpleasant.
In training, stop using that hand on the rope. The instinct is to push through and the result is that the same spot tears repeatedly and never builds proper skin. Clean it, cover it, work grip in ways that do not involve dragging rope across an open wound, and come back when it has closed. A week off the rope beats a month of reopening it.
Why this is the problem we started with
Sled & Stone exists because of this exact station. In our first HYROX the sled and the carries came down to hands, and every glove we tried either went slick when wet or cooked. So we are building a thin, tacky palm that bites when it is soaked, with a breathable top and a strap that keeps the glove locked to your hand instead of sliding.
