Look at what people are wearing on the sled pull. Most of it is half-finger, with a small patch of grip material across the middle of the palm and bare skin from the knuckles out. That is not a HYROX design. That is a lifting glove, and it is in this sport because it was the closest thing on the shelf when people started looking.
Where the half-finger glove comes from
Half-finger gloves were designed around a barbell. A bar sits across the base of your fingers and the heel of your palm, and the job of the glove is to stop a knurled steel bar from tearing the skin there. Your fingers just have to close. They are not sliding along anything, they are not being abraded, and they are not really being asked for friction.
Cutting the fingers off makes total sense for that. You keep dexterity, you keep the hand cool, and you protect the one strip of skin that needs it. It is a good solution to a lifting problem.
HYROX is not a lifting problem.
Your grip lives in your fingers
This is the part that decides the whole argument. The muscles that close your hand are not in your hand. They sit in your forearm and pull on tendons that run the length of each finger. When you squeeze a rope, the force is applied by your fingers wrapping and clamping. Your palm is mainly the wall they press against.
That is why it is your forearms that burn out on the sled pull, not your palms. You are feeling the finger flexors failing.
So friction on the finger segments is doing real work. It reduces how hard you have to clamp to stop the rope rotating out of your hand. And friction on the palm alone, with bare fingers above it, is grip material parked where it does the least.
Station by station, what your hands are actually doing
- Sled pull. The rope runs through your fingers, over and over, wet. This is both the highest grip demand in the race and the main source of rope burn, and it happens almost entirely on the finger segments a half-finger glove leaves bare.
- Farmers carry. A dead load hangs off the base of your fingers for a hundred metres. Nothing about that is a palm problem.
- Wall balls. Catching is fingertips and finger pads. A half-finger glove contributes nothing to a catch, which is why people drop reps late when their hands are wet.
- Sled push. Hands flat on the posts, driving through the heels of your palms. This one is a palm station, and a half-finger glove covers it fine.
- SkiErg and rower. Handles are held in the fingers. Every pull is a fresh squeeze, hundreds of times.
- Burpee broad jumps. Flat palms on the floor, over and over, on whatever the venue floor happens to be. Another palm station.
So: five stations load your fingers, two load your palms, and the sandbag lunges barely involve your hands at all. Half-finger gloves are built for the two. That is the whole argument.
The fair objections
Half-finger gloves are not popular by accident. There are three real reasons people prefer them, and they are all worth taking seriously.
- Heat. More coverage is more material, and a HYROX is an hour or more of continuous work indoors. This is the biggest one and it is legitimate.
- Feel. Bare fingertips read a rope better than a thick glove does.
- Getting them on. Full-finger gloves are harder to pull on with wet hands, and mid-race is a bad time to find that out.
Notice that none of those are arguments against covering your fingers. They are arguments against covering your fingers badly. Every one of them is a construction problem.
Heat is solved by an open mesh back and no lining, not by removing fingers. Feel is a function of palm thickness, not coverage: a single-layer palm with nothing padded in it stays readable, and a padded half-finger glove blunts your feel just as much. Getting them on is a pull tab and a cuff that opens properly.
Motorsport worked all of this out decades ago. A moto glove covers the whole hand, holds grip under sweat, survives abrasion, and still lets you feel a lever. Nobody races a bike in half-finger gloves, and nobody thinks full-finger means hot and clumsy. It means built properly.
What this means when you are choosing a pair
You do not have to buy ours to use this. If you are looking at any glove for this sport, the questions worth asking are the same:
- Does the grip material reach the parts of your hand that hold the rope?
- Can you see daylight through the back of it?
- Is the palm one thin layer, or is there a pad in there?
- Does anything hold it to your wrist when your grip relaxes?
A glove can be half-finger and still be a reasonable choice if the rest of it is right and you are mostly worried about the burpees. It is just not the design this sport would have arrived at if anyone had started from the sport instead of from the gym.
Why we built ours the way we did
I raced AMA Supercross and Motocross professionally for six years, in a sport where a glove is equipment and nobody is casual about it. When I started HYROX I could not find anything built to that standard. What was available either went slick when wet, cooked my hands by the second run, or left the fingers bare where the rope actually runs.
So ours is full-finger, with silicone across the palm, the thumb and the finger pads, a mesh back you can see through, and a wide wrist strap that keeps it locked on when your grip eases off. It is a race glove rather than a gym glove with the fingers removed. We race them for the first time at HYROX Salt Lake City on 19 September 2026.
